Buying Guide

Besides the maintenance work that a pool requires, there are other aspects that you have to pay attention to, including the temperature of the water. A sure necessity for pool-owners, as they provide a chance to monitor pool’s temperature, digital pool thermometers work similarly to how a classic thermometer operates.

The LCD screen offers quick readings, while the remote receiver ensures you can check on the readings, without leaving your house. However, while the models bare similarities, some features and functions differentiate between them. So, to make sure you acquire a thermometer that provides you with those extra functions, there are several factors you should be aware of.

Types
Currently, there are 3 types from which you can select, 2 especially dedicated for pools, and a third which offers versatility:

  • Analog – usually made from glass, or plastic, they contain a liquid similar to mercury, which, when exposed to varying temperature moves up and down the scale. The liquid’s nature can vary from vegetable oil to mercury or other types, so it is of the utmost importance to thoroughly clean the pool, and water, if it happens to break.
  • Digital – equipped with a large screen they provide easy-to-see results. They usually contain 2 separate pieces, one that stays, at any given moment, in the pool, and another one that is remotely placed in your house. Therefore be able to supervise the flexibility in temperature without leaving your house.
  • Infrared – these types use a laser beam, which, once pointed towards the object you want to verify, will broadcast the temperature that the object has. They will also work with water, so all you have to do is aim it at it, scan, and wait to receive the results. The entire action takes but a few seconds.

Accessories
Some models come with more than just scale, supplying you with additional pieces of equipment. Whereas many come with installation kits, others will require you to buy it separately. Also, some types are stand-alone, so you can pair them with an already-existing remote receiver, while others incorporate the receiver in the package. So, you should pay close attention to what they come with, so you’ll have everything you need to set it up as soon as you acquire it.

Budget and Warranty
Depending on how complex the unit is, the price will range accordingly. Therefore, a simple thermometer, while more accessible for a low budget, won’t tell you more than the water degrees, whereas a more complex one will alert temperature changes, especially if they go under the limit you’ve selected, going as far as providing you with a complete history of how the water’s temperature changed throughout time. The warranty also plays an important role, as it can range from 1 year up to even 5 years. So, according to what you need, and how complex its structure is, you might want to select a longer warranty period.

All in all, if you pay attention to what functions a thermometer comes with, as well as what it can display, you’ll be able to pick a unit that satisfies your needs. If you carefully consider how you wish to operate it, as well as what it comes equipped with, you’ll surely make a selection that will last you years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

? Celsius or Fahrenheit degrees?
Both. All the thermometers allow you to toggle between ℉ or ℃.

? May I use it in saltwater?
Yes. They are made in such a fashion that salt water or chemicals that are usually found in a pool won’t affect them and their performance.

?Does it need batteries to function?
Yes. The floating units that are found in the pool do need batteries to function. While some can also use solar energy, others will require you to replace the battery once in a while.

?How do I measure water degrees?
A digital type has a large display, on one or both sides, or comes with a tag-along remote interface placed in your home. Thus, you can easily read the degrees on both screens. An analog thermometer will provide you with a reading by using the mercury line, while an infrared unit will tell you the temperature whenever you point it at the water.

? What is ideal water temperature?
Usually, the pool water should be anywhere between 78 degrees F and 82 degrees F. For example, at 80 degrees F, it is warm enough for kids and seniors to enjoy, yet fresh enough for an invigorating dip.

?Is an alarm useful?
Yes it is. Similar to how a pool alarm will let you know if someone is accessing your pool, a thermometer alarm alerts when there has been a drastic change in temperature. It is extremely useful if you won’t be swimming for a while.

? Does the water temperature affects is overall quality?
Drastic temperature changes in the pool water raise the risk of damaging it. The value should remain constant, for a relaxing environment, as well as a healthy lifestyle. Water that is hot for lengthy periods will start to gather bacteria, and you’ll have to use even more chlorine, which might lead to skin and hair problems. If a pool is too cold, however, there are also health risks involved, especially if the users suffer from heart problems.
